Movie Weekend Preview: January 5

For those of us that don’t live in huge cities, January can be a good time to catch up on Oscar bait films. This week is no exception.

Hidden Figures

A promising film with a wide array of acting talent, Hidden Figures tells the story of black women working at NASA during the historic height of racism, sexism, and the space race. There’s little to make me think this film won’t be great, and topics of racial injustice ought to be of concern for Christians. Like Fences before it, I think this will be a great conversation starter.

A Monster Calls

In what looks like a slightly more grown up version of The BFG, this book adaptation promises an adventurous ride of CGI fun and thrills. Whether it will actually deliver is hard to tell. The taken is good and the trailer exciting. It does, however, look scary at moments, which is something to consider if you’re bringing the kids along.

Underworld: Blood Wars

Undoubtedly, when you were making up a wish list for 2017, you had a new Underworld movie near the top of the list, right? No? Nobody? Well, there might be a good reason for that. Regardless, Selene is back for another dark war of Lycans versus vampires because . . . reasons. I’d take a pass on this one. Along with a heavy eye roll, of course.

Consensus: See Hidden Figures.
